Journal Entry #7 Road Brent Staples's Essay

Have you ever been in a situation such as the ones Staples described  where you perceived someone (or someone perceived you) as threatening  How did you react after reading Staples's essay, do you think you would react the same way now?
I do not know if others have seen me as threatening,  but I do know I have thought of others just by looking at them. A feeling of frightening powers me thinking someone is going to hurt me by just looking at their appearance. I know that one must not always judge by the looks, but by their character; I can not help knowing that I live by thought of society. One is easily influenced by it even if they did not mean to. When I was younger my mom, sister  and I walked down a street in the late afternoon. It started to get darker and darker and we had no recall in what direction we were going. I remember seeing a man coming up ahead of us and he seemed distracted  He was a dark man with a plain white shirt, torn blue jeans, and worn out shoes. His face was stern but with a mystery behind that eerie smile. My mommy hesitate and looked uneasily  and her decision was quickly made to cross the street away from the man. As we continued along i turned around and saw the man starring he smiled at me and waved slowly. I turned around quickly with mommy walking at a faster pace. To this day I have no clue who that man was and why he smiled at me. I can understand why she did that and why society immediately thinks something of the ordinary to become more complex. Now a days, i look at someone and come to a opinion about them, and they usually are all the same as I predicted.
